The Doctor first encountered the Black Guardian during his quest for the key to Time – a device so powerful that it would grant its owner unlimited power. The Black Guardian wished to use it to bring chaos to the universe and disguised himself and the White Guardian in an attempt to trick the Doctor into giving it to him. But the Doctor saw through the illusion and defeated him by scattering the six segments of the key through time and space; make a powerful enemy in the process.
Trying to hide from the Guardian’s Vengeance, the Doctor installed a randomiser in the TARDIS so that no one could predict where the ship would land next. Eventually the transcendental being tracked him down in his fifth incarnation. He recruited Turlough, an alien trapped on Earth, to destroy the Doctor, promising to return to him with his home planet if he did so. But after travelling with the Doctor for some time, Turlough decided he couldn’t bring himself to harm the Time Lord and the black Guardian was banished once more.
