During the Time War, the Gelth lost their physical bodies and turned into gaseous creatures. They came to Cardiff in 1869 through a rift in space and time beneath Gabriel Sneed’s Mortuary, where they lived in recently deceased humans and in the pipes that fuelled the lamps. Escaping into Mrs Peace’s dead body, the Gelth re-animated her and she wandered the street, then gaining access to where Charles Dickens was read from his novel, ‘A Christmas Carol’!
The Doctor initially Gelth sympathy for these bluish creatures that spoke with childlike voices, and they requested the assistance of the psychically gifted Gwyneth to help open the rift to enable them to establish new forms. Rose was worried that the Gelth had hidden intentions and she was right – they were really an invasion who wanted to take over the world! Gwyneth sacrificed herself by igniting the gas that the Gelth relied upon for their survival, thwarting their macabre plan.
