Toclafane

How the last vestiges of humanity survived the end of the universe…

No one was more shocked to discover the truth behind the Toclafane that the Doctor. After all, he had tried to save them once! Desperate to escape the end of the universe in the year 100 trillion, humanity had heard the distant call of "Come to Utopia". With the Doctor’s help, a refugee camp on Malcassairo used a massive rocket to reach their destination … only to find there was nothing there. Their paradise did not exist.

In a wretched attempt to survive “the darkness, the never-ending darkness”, humanity turned upon itself, becoming self-sustaining cyborg heads in metal spheres. As the Master described it, "all that human invention that has sustained them across the aeons, it all turned inwards they cannibalised themselves". With a collective consciousness, they were almost invincible, but they’d also become childlike and insane, taking pleasure in other people’s pain.
